Remote Control / Replicate feature using Bluetooth LE

This new feature allows the user to wirelessly synchronise two or more iOS devices (iPhones, iPad, or iPod) together so that the SwimStart app running on each device will replicate the other.
This feature utilises Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for communication, and should not be confused with connecting a speaker via bluetooth.
Configure one device as the ‘Primary’ SwimStart app and then you are able to connect one or more ‘Remote’ iOS devices to the Primary.
  • The Remote SwimStart app will replicate the Primary app.
  • Any Remote can start and stop the Primary and all of it’s connected remotes.

Here is a scenario or two:

Scenario One

You have the Primary SwimStart app running on your iPad at the start blocks with the speaker connected as per usual:
  • You are at the other end of the pool recording times .
  • You don’t want to walk the 50m to stop/start the Primary.
  • So connect to the Primary SwimStart app with your iPhone and control the Primary remotely.
  • You do this by configuring the SwimStart app running on the iPhone as a ‘Remote’ and connect to the iPad.

Scenario Two

You have lots of swimmers in the lane and want to start half the group at the other end.  The pool pace clocks at either end of your pool are out of sync. $^%$!@@#

  • Put a ‘Primary’ at one end and a Remote at the other, where the swimmers can see the clocks.
  • The SwimStart clocks are sync’d at both ends. 🙂
  • The Swimmers get the Go signal at boths ends of the pool simultaneously.

SETUP:

  1. Choose your Primary iOS device (eg iPad) and set it up with the external speaker as per usual.
  2. In the SwimStart->Settings->Remote Control menu, switch ‘Enable Remote Control’ on.
  3. In the SwimStart->Settings->Remote Control menu, set ‘Mode’ to Primary.
  4. Choose ‘Save’ to leave the settings menu.

The Primary iOS device is now waiting for connections.

  1. Choose your Remote iOS device (eg iPhone) and start the SwimStart app.
  2. In the SwimStart->Settings->Remote Control menu, switch ‘Enable Remote Control’ on.
  3. In the SwimStart->Settings->Remote Control menu, set ‘Mode’ to Remote.
  4. In the SwimStart->Settings->Remote Control menu, choose ‘Connect to :’ and select the Primary iOS device.

Note: The Primary iOS device must have SwimStart running in foreground in ‘Primary Mode’ for the previous step to work.

  1.  Choose ‘Save’ to leave the settings menu.
  2. The Primary and Remote should now be connected. See the status message below the Swim Clock at bottom of screen.
  3. The Swim Clocks should be in sync.
  4. At the Remote, press the Start button, select Red or Black top and they should both start in sync.

If remote control mode is not in use, disable the feature to save power.
– Switch ‘Enable Bluetooth’ off.
